Preventive Dentistry for Children
The most effective dental care is care that prevents problems before they start. Dr. Boyd and our team partner with Temple families to build healthy habits and protect your child's smile from infancy through the teenage years.
Why Prevention Matters for Children
Tooth decay is the most common chronic disease in children — but it is almost entirely preventable with regular professional care and good home habits. When caught early, small problems are simple and inexpensive to treat. Left unaddressed, they become larger, more painful, and more costly.
Primary (baby) teeth are not just placeholders. They guide speech development, hold space for permanent teeth, support nutrition, and affect your child's confidence. Keeping them healthy matters.
Dr. Boyd recommends children begin preventive dental care by age one and visit every six months throughout childhood. This establishes a comfortable relationship with the dentist early and ensures every stage of development is monitored.

Our Preventive Services
Each service is performed with care and explained to both parent and child in age-appropriate language.
Comprehensive Exams
At every visit, Dr. Boyd performs a thorough examination of your child's teeth, gums, bite, jaw development, and soft tissues. Early detection of problems saves time, money, and discomfort later.
Professional Cleanings
A gentle professional cleaning removes tartar and plaque buildup that brushing at home cannot reach, followed by polishing to leave teeth smooth and clean. We also review brushing and flossing technique with your child.
Fluoride Treatments
Topical fluoride strengthens developing enamel and significantly reduces the risk of cavities. Dr. Boyd recommends fluoride treatments at appropriate intervals based on your child's age and individual cavity risk.
Dental Sealants
Sealants are thin protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of back molars — the teeth most vulnerable to decay. They are quick, painless, and can prevent cavities in those grooves for years.
Digital X-Rays
Low-radiation digital X-rays help Dr. Boyd detect decay between teeth, monitor root development, and evaluate jaw and bone health that cannot be seen with the naked eye. X-rays are taken only when clinically necessary.
Bite & Development Monitoring
As your child grows, Dr. Boyd tracks bite alignment, tooth eruption patterns, and jaw development at each visit. Early identification of spacing or bite concerns can simplify future orthodontic treatment.
Oral Hygiene Instruction
Our team teaches children the right brushing and flossing techniques for their age. We also give parents practical, specific guidance on diet, habits, and home care that will protect their child's smile between visits.
Mouthguard Recommendations
Active children who play contact or collision sports benefit from a custom mouthguard. Dr. Boyd can recommend the right protection for your child and discuss when a custom fit is preferable to store-bought options.
Recommended Care Schedule
Preventive care needs shift as your child grows. Here is what Dr. Boyd typically recommends at each stage.
By age 1 (or first tooth)
First dental visit to establish a dental home, check early development, and counsel parents on infant oral care.
Ages 1 – 3
Visits every 6 months. Focus on cavity prevention habits, fluoride as appropriate, and monitoring early tooth eruption.
Ages 4 – 7
Biannual visits with sealants on first permanent molars as they erupt. Begin teaching independent brushing and flossing.
Ages 8 – 12
Twice-yearly exams with close attention to mixed dentition, bite development, and readiness for orthodontic evaluation if needed.
Ages 13 – 18
Continued preventive care through adolescence, including wisdom tooth monitoring and sport injury prevention guidance.
Home Care Guidance We Share with Every Family
Professional care works best when paired with consistent habits at home. At every visit, our team reinforces these fundamentals with parents and children alike.
Brush twice daily
Use a soft-bristled brush and fluoride toothpaste appropriate for your child's age. Parents should assist until age 7–8.
Floss once daily
Flossing removes food and plaque from between teeth where brushing cannot reach. Start as soon as teeth touch.
Limit sugary drinks
Juice, sports drinks, and soda feed cavity-causing bacteria. Water and milk are far better choices for developing teeth.
Visit every 6 months
Consistent biannual visits catch problems early, reinforce good habits, and keep your child comfortable with the dentist.
